Whether you have a bleeding disorder or are a carrier, you will be supported and monitored throughout your pregnancy to ensure that you and your baby are not at any additional risks.
Having A Baby
Childbirth
As each person is different, a personalised delivery plan will be written by the haemophilia consultant in collaboration with the obstetricians. This will detail what is safe for you and your baby during the delivery. The plan will be discussed with you in clinic. Depending on the nature and severity of your symptoms or the disorder your baby has inherited, certain measures such as treatments and hospital care will be planned for and provided.
Diagnosis
If you are a known carrier of haemophilia it is possible to diagnose whether the baby is affected by taking a sample from the umbilical cord. Sometimes a blood sample from the baby may be required. This will be discussed with you during antenatal clinic appointments.
For other bleeding disorders such as Von Willebrand disease, doctors usually wait until the child is a bit older to diagnose them. To find out more information, you should discuss this with your haemophilia centre.
